Measuring Success

Measuring Success

We all have been at a conference or some kind of seminar where we see the anchor reading out a list of achievements of a person and introducing them to the crowd. And at times, the keynote speaker doesn't need an introduction because they might be famous. But what makes them eligible to give out talks to the public or audience? Success?

Many would say because of his achievements, experiences, or success.  I once had a small chat with a TEDx event organizer and asked them about their eligibility for being a speaker at such events. The answer, you have to be successful in your own field. We always look at achievers as successful people. But being successful, is it really that hard? What is being successful in life?

Having earned a million dollars, is it a success?  A millionaire turning a billionaire, is it a success? Reaching the top position at a Fortune 500 company, is a success?  Becoming a head of state from a humble chai wala, is a success? Winning a gold medal in the Olympics, is a success?

Society has a predefined notion of success. Being rich, famous, at the peak in an organization, social worker, political leader, etc. But is it really being successful in life? Let us take an example for both extreme cases. A person who recently was promoted as the CEO of a Fortune 500 company with an annual salary of 7 figures, would you consider that person to be successful? A daily wage worker who struggles to feed his family every day and provides his family with nutritious food and comfortable life for his/her family, would you consider him/her to be successful?

In my opinion, I would consider both of them to be successful. The notion of success is and should be defined by ourselves. Success is like a journey and not the destination. The dictionary meaning of success is "the accomplishment of one's goals". And that is what should be being successful. A Content life is a successful life. The perspective of success is different for every individual. You can look up to a person and be inspired but never define success based on others. Dr.Abdul Kalam, the 11th president of India, was he successful when he became the president of India or when he achieved his goal of seeing India as a country launch space satellites?

Trying to fulfill the notion of society is hard, but not achieving your goals. Because at the end of the day, it is your struggle and your story that would be written. It is a debatable topic, and I really appreciate it, but these are just my thoughts. The current situation is seeing a ray of hope and I really wish it comes to an end pretty soon. Till then stay safe.
